Macalester College will host the World Food Program
Event organized by UNA-MN Young Professionals for International Cooperation of
Minnesota (UNA-MN YPIC). With this event, UNA-MN YPIC hopes to raise awareness
about the global food crisis and promote a U.N. Millennium Development
Goal—reducing by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger by 2015.
Many American citizens may not know of the World Food Program (WFP) or even the
struggle of entire nations as the world’s food supply and demand descends into
crisis. The global food prices have risen 83 percent over the last three years
forcing millions into extreme hunger. We may not observe hunger riots on our
streets or people scavenging for food in garbage dumps like in Haiti, Somalia,
Burkina Faso and other nations hit hardest by the crisis, but the world food
crisis is no longer a distant problem. The soaring food prices are hitting the
pockets of low- and middle-income Americans, as USDA estimates the prices of
commodities such as eggs, milk, and chicken have gone up 25%, 13%, and 7%
respectively in the last few months.
So, what’s causing the soaring food prices around the world? Dr. Steve Suppan
(Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy), Prof. William G. Moseley
(Macalester College), and Mark Crea (Feed My Starving Children) will appear at
Macalester College to inform all who attend about the topics surrounding this
issue and how you can help. This event will be made possible by the UNA-MN YPIC.
UNA-MN YPIC is a program of the United Nations Association of Minnesota that
seeks to engage young professionals to promote effective U.S. involvement in
international affairs, while educating Minnesotans on the issues of national and
global importance.
